In Napa

Had about an hour or so at lunchtime to see if I could find anything to shoot, while at a company meeting in Napa, California.  The light was harsh and this tree caught my attention.

Here’s the monochrome version, conversion in Aperture:

Which one do you prefer and why?

  1. Excellent composition. I believe I prefer the colour version, but lately I’ve been “thinking” more in colour. I would be proud of either one though.

Thanks, Peter. In this case, I too prefer the color version.

    Cheers!

I seem to work more with B&W images these days but I have to say I prefer the colour version of this shot. The reason can be summed up in one word — contrast.

The colour version has it, the B&W conversion does not. Having said that, I think a second stab at the B&W conversion could see me change my preference.

I can well understand why this tree caught the eye and I like the composition.

Calvin. thanks for visiting and your kind comments. I didn’t notice it till you pointed it out, but you’re right, the monochrome image has lower contrast. I am working on a laptop screen but will revisit the monochrome conversion when I have access to a calibrated screen and can “see” better. Appreciate the pointer. Any chance you’ll post your B&W work on the forum? Cheers!
